London fire: people trapped as major blaze engulfs tower block – latest

At least 200 firefighters and 40 engines on the scene of a huge fire at Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, near Notting Hill, in West London

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said a “major incident” had been declared.

London fire brigade has updated its statement on the fire:

Forty fire engines and over 200 firefighters and officers have been called to a tower block fire on the Lancaster West estate in north Kensington this morning. The brigade has received multiple calls. The fire is from the second floor to the top floor of the 27-floor building.

Assistant Commissioner Dan Daly said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire. This is a large and very serious incident and we have deployed numerous resources and specialist appliances.“

The brigade was called at 0054 and is still at the scene. Fire crews from North Kensington, Kensington, Hammersmith and Paddington and from surrounding fire stations are in attendance. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

An unknown number of people have been killed and dozens injured after a huge fire engulfed a tower block in west London in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of firefighters battled to rescue residents from their flats after the fire broke out at Grenfell Tower on Latimer Road, near Notting Hill, shortly before 1am.

The blaze rapidly engulfed the full height of the 24-storey block, and was still burning strongly more than six hours later, with a thick pall of dark smoke visible across the capital.

Residents could be seen waving and screaming from their windows, as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought to rescue them from their flats.

Shortly before 8am, the London fire commissioner, Dany Cotton, confirmed there had been “a number of fatalities” as a result of the “unprecedented” fire.

“In my 29 years of being a firefighter I have never ever seen anything of this scale,” she said. “This is a major fire that has affected all floors of this 24 storey building, from the second floor upwards.”

The number of deaths could not yet be confirmed “due to the size and complexity of this fire,” Cotton said, adding that the cause of the blaze was also unknown at this stage.

Two hundred firefighters were at the scene along with 40 engines and a range of specialist vehicles, including 14 fire rescue vehicles, she said. In addition, at least 20 ambulance crews were in attendance.

The London ambulance service said 50 people had been taken to five London hospitals.

A Guardian reporter saw one man waving a blanket from his window and calling for help, as firefighters sprayed his window with water to try to douse the flames. People from neighbouring estates huddled outside in their pyjamas near the flaming building, some shouting “put your head out the window” or telling the man to shout his flat number so they could guide the fire services to him.

Hadil Alamily told the Guardian she had seen “someone jump on fire from the top floor”. She said the man was flashing a light in an SOS pattern. “He was screaming ‘Help, help, help!’ but no one helped. He dashed a mattress out of the window. He was literally on fire and jumped.”

“There was a woman with a child. I saw her waving maybe 30 minutes ago,” said a man who asked not to be named. “She said I’ve got a child … I saw them spraying her window.”

Nick Paget-Brown, the leader of Kensington and Chelsea council, told Sky News: “Several hundred would have been in there. It’s a question of establishing how many were in there at the time of the fire.” There are believed to be at least 120 homes in the building.
