Is a megaquake about to hit the United States?

Earthquake

(NaturalNews) According to experts, it is almost inevitable that the "big one" – a mega earthquake – will rock the United States shortly. While Los Angeles or San Francisco along the San Andreas Fault are certainly prone to the devastating effects of mother earth, many experts now believe that the next megaquake will be somewhere entirely different.

Concerns are rising that the next big hit could soon be seen in the middle part of the country, along the New Madrid fault zone.

New Madrid fault zone
The New Madrid fault zone, which is approximately six times larger than the San Andreas fault zone in California, runs for more than 130 miles through the southern and Midwestern United States. As reported by The Daily Sheeple, scientists assure us that the New Madrid fault is a ticking bomb ready to go off anytime soon.

The New Madrid fault is around 30 years overdue for a major seismic event. Scientists predict that when it finally happens, it is going to be the biggest disaster in modern American history, surpassing the events of the 1811 and 1812 New Madrid earthquakes.

Due to a greater population and lack of earthquake building codes, a "big one" could cause more destruction than a major quake around the Cascadia and San Andreas fault combined. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, earthquakes along the New Madrid fault shake and damage an area that is approximately 20 times larger than earthquakes in California and most other active seismic areas.

In addition, 15 nuclear reactors are situated alongside the New Madrid fault zone, which could cause a disaster 15 times worse than Fukushima.

Recently, eight states – Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas – took part in a major drill, "Show Me Mass Care Exercise," to practice how they would react during a mega-earthquake along the New Madrid Fault Line.

These eight states are not the only ones preparing for a major disaster. In June, FEMA ran an exercise called "Cascadia Rising" to test the response to a megaquake and tsunami hitting the U.S. West Coast. Some scientists believe that the Cascadia Fault could erupt with the biggest earthquake and tsunami in recorded history, while others predict that the San Andreas Fault or New Madrid Fault will go first.

Government institutions are actively urging and helping people to prepare. And when that happens, you can be sure that a disaster is not far off.

Man-made quakes on the rise
Earlier this month, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the Oklahoma earthquake as the largest the state has ever experienced. In recent years, the number of significant earthquakes with a magnitude 3.0 and higher in the eastern and central sections of the nation have risen dramatically.

Oklahoma has never historically been at risk for significant earthquakes. However, USGS scientists found that since fracking started in the Midwest the number of earthquakes has shot through the roof, putting the area at risk of more of these record-breaking quakes.

While all scientists agree that a major earthquake is about to hit the United States, opinions on the location are divided.

Don't wait until it is too late; start informing yourself and preparing for the worst. At the very least, you should have emergency food, supplies for a power outage and drinking water at hand.
