Wisdom teeth

(NaturalNews) For many years it's been standard operating procedure for dentists to recommend the surgical removal of wisdom teeth – even when there is no pain or symptoms. But is it really necessary or beneficial?

According to a recent study, the answer is "maybe not."

From Fox News Health:

"Third molars, or so-called wisdom teeth, generally emerge fully or partially between ages 17 and 26 into limited space and they are often wedged against the second molars. This can cause swelling, root damage, decay or gum disease, and in these cases experts agree the wisdom teeth should be removed.

"But if there are no symptoms, it is unclear whether the benefits of surgery outweigh the risks, researchers write in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews."

Lack of relevant studies
There have been no studies showing any benefit to the removal of "symptom-free" wisdom teeth, which is surprising, since "the preventive removal of asymptomatic disease-free wisdom teeth is very common" in the U.S. and elsewhere, according to lead researcher Hossein Ghaeminia.

The researchers, who set out to review existing scientific literature on the subject, found only two relevant previous studies, and neither of them "compared most aspects of health-related quality of life after removal versus retention of asymptomatic wisdom teeth."

Surgical removal of wisdom teeth is not only expensive and painful, but also carries risks such as infection, inflammation and temporary nerve damage.

Medical insurance often does not cover the cost of wisdom tooth removal, although most dental plans do.

Martha E. Nunn of Creighton University in Omaha, who was not involved in the study, said that another prospective cohort study would likely be conducted to examine the risks associated with not removing asymptomatic wisdom teeth.

Further research regarding this aspect is warranted, due to the fact that surgery on older persons is generally considered more risky than for teens, and sometimes people develop symptoms in later life that require the removal of their wisdom teeth.

However, Nunn said that she personally disagrees with the removal of asymptomatic wisdom teeth in young adolescents, due to her experience with some children who suffered permanent bone damage as a result of such surgeries.

Both Nunn and Ghaeminia seem to agree that more research is necessary because, based on the lack of studies, it's difficult to determine the actual risks versus benefits of early removal of symptom-free wisdom teeth.

Drawbacks of conventional dentistry
For many critics of modern dentistry this particular issue might seem minor compared to others, such as the continued widespread use of mercury amalgam tooth fillings.

According to many experts, the use of mercury amalgam fillings is the main source of exposure to mercury in humans, and should not be considered "harmless," as conventional dentistry proclaims.

Research has shown that amalgam fillings release mercury vapors continuously, which can lead to birth defects and reproductive problems (among many other health issues), since mercury accumulates in both the ovaries of females and testes of males.

Concerns over mercury amalgam fillings and other questionable practices have led to the emergence of "bio-dentistry," an approach which avoids the use of mercury fillings, x-rays and other potentially harmful conventional dental methods. Bio-dentistry philosophy recognizes the importance of considering the whole body in the maintenance of good dental health.

Bio-dentistry practitioners also specialize in the safe removal of mercury fillings and other metal dental work that may cause health problems.

As with mainstream allopathic medicine as a whole, the conventional dental profession is often out of step with natural healing principles, and continues to pursue treatment methods that are often harmful and non-holistic in nature.

It is recommended that you seek out dentists who conform to bio-dentistry principles, or else you and your family may be subject not only to unnecessary procedures, but to highly dangerous ones as well.
