NYT attacks dietary supplements while promoting overpriced prescriptions that kill 100k Americans a year

(NaturalNews) To hear The New York Times tell it, anyone who spends a single dime on dietary supplements - any dietary supplement - is wasting their money because none of them work.

In a recent story the Times reported that Americans currently spend in excess of $30 billion a year on vitamins, minerals, herbal products and super-food supplements, among others, which it claims are "unnecessary or of doubtful benefit to those taking them."

In all, the paper said, that amounts to around $100 a year for every man, woman and child in the country.

The report went on to essentially criticize the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, which it said "opened the floodgates" for an industry to be able to freely bring these products to market "without submitting any evidence to the Food and Drug Administration" that they're safe and effective. Of course, this assumes that a government agency's blessing is necessary for anything to be legitimate, which reveals clearly the Leftist establishment media's unflinching support for big government.

The Times article then said that the law only requires supplement makers to promote their products as "supporting" the health of various bodily parts and functions, as long as they don't make claims that nutritional supplements can prevent, cure or treat any condition or ailment (some can, but more on that later). This is true.

But the writer laments that because of this wording, it doesn't "stop many people from assuming that 'support' translates into a proven benefit" – a pretty broad and arrogant assumption, given that all packaging of nutritional supplements clearly state they should not be seen as treating or preventing anything. The writer has no way of knowing that most people who take supplementation 'assume that support means a cure.'

Note to the Times: Government-approved medicine isn't all there is
The article then said that following the 1994 law, sales of supplements skyrocketed even though, in some cases, "high-quality research showed they were no better than a placebo at supporting health." No one ever said that every single nutritional supplement sold was legitimate – but then again, not every medicine a) has been properly tested before it was "approved" by the government; or b) did what it was marketed to do safely.

In fact, prescription medications kill many more people each year than firearms and automobiles combined. Way back in 2004, Natural News founder/editor Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, noted that studies showed 100,000 Americans each year were killed by prescription medications, with another 2 million injured. And he pointed out the obvious: That no one taking several medications has a clean bill of health. Every one of them are sick, not healthy, and are just getting by, medically speaking.

Then there is the expense, which the Times article also highlighted. Americans may spend $30 billion a year on nutritional supplements, but even after the passage of the 'Affordable' Care Act, we literally more than 10 times that amount (>$309 billion) every year – and the spending is increasing, not decreasing.

One thing is clear: The mainstream establishment media has, for years, been attempting to sabotage the supplement industry, out of fear that if more Americans discovered how to naturally treat and prevent disease, one of their cash cows – Big Pharma – would take an unacceptable financial hit.

As for this latest assault on the supplement industry by the Times, there is much more in the piece – and you can read it if you want. But know this: The main points of the article are: a) that only government-approved health care and medicine is valid; b) that any treatment or nutritional supplementation that falls outside the "accepted" standard of the compliant liberal Left is worthless, wrongheaded, stupid and senseless; and c) you're a dolt wasting your money if you don't fall in lockstep with establishment health care and medicine.
