Some folks think diet soda can help them lose weight. Not only is that untrue, diet soda causes lots of health problems and it can cause weight gain.

Here are some of the things that will happen to your body if you drink diet soda regularly.

Kidney damage

A study conducted by Harvard researchers found that drinking diet soda regularly (and long term) can reduce kidney function by up to 30 percent.

High risk of depression

People who drink four cans of diet soda a day have a 30 percent higher risk of depression. In fact, research shows that folks who drink diet soda have a higher risk of depression than those who drink regular soda.

Drink coffee instead of diet soda. Drinking coffee every day can lower risk of depression by 10 percent.

Less brain defense

Aspartame, the artificial sweeter in diet soda weakens the brain’s antioxidant defense system. Research shows this artificial sweetener can cause migraines, anxiety, hearing loss, fibromyalgia, memory loss, brain tumors and so on.

Cardiovascular disease

In this study researchers concluded that people who drink diet soda regularly have a higher risk of stroke and heart attack. Note that more studies have linked diet soda to cardiovascular disease.

Higher risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome

This study found that daily drinkers of diet soda have 36 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome. The same people also have a 67 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Additional studies show that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda can cause glucose intolerance.

Increased asthma symptoms

Diet soda can ruin your lungs. Research shows that those who drink diet soda regularly have worse symptoms of asthma compared to those who don’t drink diet soda. In fact, the more soda you drink the worse the symptoms get.

Weight gain

People who drink diet soda regularly tend to overeat. That’s because diet soda contains sweeteners that trigger junk and sugar cravings.

Tooth erosion

Diet soda and regular soda ruin dental health. In fact, researchers say they’re as corrosive to dental enamel as battery acid.
