7/1999 A cable-car crash in France has killed 20 people. The group of french astronomers/ scientists apparently or it was rumored that they were going to reveal something of great concern to them in the month of November but were all killed in July The privately-run machine was bringing astronomers and support staff to a mountaintop observatory. It's the worst-ever such accident in French history. The radio astronomers were heading up to the top of a 2,600 metre high peak, where an array of giant dishes scour the heavens for distant objects. They were going to stay there for a week.
But just before the 20-minute ride was to end, their cable-car came crashing to the ground.

Officials said no tourists were aboard the gondola. They ordered an investigation into what caused the crash. So far, it looks the car disconnected from two of its three cables.

The impact from the 80-metre drop into the valley killed all the passengers instantly. Traveling Along with the scientists were construction workers, a cleaning crew, and phone technicians. Many of the victims were locals from St. Etienne-en-Devoluy, the small village below.

"We've set up a rest chapel and we're helping feed all of the people who have come, says one local woman. "About three-quarters of the victims are from around here."
