Uninvited Guests


Doubt, indecision, fear - all unwanted company

Uninvited guests who have just dropped in for a spell

Chaos, turmoil, regrets - all beating at my door

Pleading to let them in so that they can join the others.

Depression, sadness, mourning - all tapping at my window

Sneering and laughing at my fruitless exercise of self-pity.

Sickness, disease, and poverty all join in on the clamor outside

There is not let up, no break from the onslaught, no peace.

I'm slowly becoming paralyzed by my own weakness.

But now, slowly and quietly I start to not only hear but

Feel God's word bubbling up out of the depths of my soul.

It's as if they had been stored there for a purpose - like today!

I get up off my blessed assurance, I turn off the television, and

I ignore the telephone - I fall to my knees and as I do the spirits

Outside scream in agony - "don't do it", "it won't help", "stop".

Ignoring their evil mockery I cry out to the Father of creation

And, in the name of his son Jesus I rebuke the ungodly intruders.

More screams and more clamor as they beat harder on the outside

I prayer harder and at just about the time I think the spirits are going

To actually penetrate the exterior - there arrives the sound of a mighty

Rushing wind, and then, suddenly there is a divine sacred silence.

Now I hear laughter, joyous, heartfelt heartwarming holy laughter

I'm amazed at its strength and then I'm shocked at the realization that

This awesome sound of freedom and joy is coming from my own lips.
