God Told the Man and Told his Wife Qur’an 2:35



God told the man and told his wife

To live in Eden without strife

With bird and beast and donkey too,

And eat the fruit, enjoy the view.



Though every other creature might

Taste fruit of every tree for spite,

God told the people not to eat

From one tree that was set with treat.



God had revealed to them the names

Hidden from angels and their flames,

So they were still dependent on

God only for knowledge at dawn.



The tree of knowledge of the right

And wrong was forbidden in sight,

Because God only had the power

Of knowledge for the day and hour.



Dependence on God only came

With a price of immortal shame

For haughty man, who to his blame

Should grasp the knowledge for a claim.



All knowledge comes from God alone,

Both that of angels and of stone,

And even donkeys, who are wise,

Got all their share from God of skies.



Man could reside beside the ass

Within the garden on the grass,

Or he could try to make his way

A higher one in wisdom’s pay.



What he will choose is best unsaid.

Let God be judge. I’ll go to bed.

I only say the donkey’s choice

Is one that makes this ass rejoice.
