(Natural News) The reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) and Chlorella vulgaris are known as superfoods. In a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researchers sought to uncover the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and synergistic properties of the two.
Aqueous extracts from reishi (GLE) and C. vulgaris (CVE) were collected for testing. These were examined for their phytochemical content, as well as their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, synergistic, addictive, and antagonistic effects.
Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and trace minerals. Antioxidant capacity was also more potent when the extracts were combined than when used individually.
The researchers tested the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in stimulated white blood cells. It was observed that the combination worked better than the individual extracts in suppressing inflammation. The extracts’ anti-inflammatory-dependent antioxidant effect was also significantly higher than that of standard anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone.
The outcomes led the researchers to conclude that the extracts were used better as a combination than individually because of synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They were also effective as alternative treatments for conditions that arise from inflammation and oxidative stress.
