(Natural News) Toxins are harmful substances found in the environment. They can range from heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, to chemicals, such as pollutants and insecticides, and everything in between.

A detox is the natural process of eliminating and neutralizing toxins from the body. Your kidneys, intestines and liver normally do a good job of eliminating these toxins and excreting them as waste products. Different people have different reactions to a detox diet, so the speed and efficiency of the detox may be highly dependent on the individual’s needs. Kwang says that if a person is being detoxified properly, they can see improvements right away. They feel better immediately and consistently. On the other hand, if it is done incorrectly, the results can fluctuate with the person alternating between feeling worse and feeling better over the course of a few months. According to Kwang, the main problem is in trying to manage the condition instead of focusing on the core of the issue.
“Toxins come in combinations of heavy metals,” Kwang says. This is the core problem, and it is because of this that the toxins have to be detoxified as a combination.
Detox foods
There are many kinds of foods that can aid the detox process. Depending on your body type and specific dietary needs, some diet foods may be more effective than others. Rather than a juice cleanse, you can try home-cooked meals packed with fruits and vegetables, and rich in lean proteins, unrefined whole grains and healthy fats.
Vegetables: Vegetables are loaded with phytochemicals, which are naturally occurring compounds that can help regulate hormones, boost the immune system and prevent cell damage. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbages and cauliflower make for an excellent liver detox. Kale, artichokes, onions and garlic are also popular choices.
Fruits: It is recommended to have around five to 10 servings of fruits a day. Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, and strawberries, come with a whole host of benefits. Add some variety and mix it up with apples, avocados, papayas, oranges, pineapples and watermelons.
Beans and legumes: High in fiber, protein and iron, beans and legumes promote a healthy digestive system.
