(NaturalNews) Noted U.S. senator from Texas and potential 2016 GOP presidential contender Ted Cruz has accused the Obama Administration of ignoring the law while engaged in "counterfeiting immigration documents" under the president's controversial executive amnesty order.

In a recent interview on Fox News, Cruz was addressing Obama's action -- which he took in the weeks following the 2014 midterm elections in November -- on the heels of a ruling by a federal judge in Texas ordering a temporary halt to President Obama's executive action.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen, appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush, issued his order Feb. 16. It puts on hold Obama's action to prevent up to 5 million people residing illegally in the country from being deported.

In his interview, Cruz said Obama's administration was ignoring the law and the judge's order.

"One of the things it points out is the president has claimed, rather absurdly, that the basis of his authority is 'prosecutorial discretion.' That he's simply choosing not to prosecute 4.5 million people here illegally," Cruz told Fox News, as quoted by The Associated Press. "But what the district court concluded, quite rightly, is they're doing far more than that. The administration is printing work authorizations. It is affirmatively acting in contravention of federal law. Basically, what its doing is counterfeiting immigration documents, because the work authorizations its printing are directly contrary to the text of federal law. It is dangerous when the president ignores federal law."

"22 times"

Cruz is the former Solicitor General of Texas. Before that, he was an Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice and an adjunct professor of law at the University of Texas Law School.

In a memo accompanying his order, Hanen said the case on which he ruled should proceed, adding that the 26 states that sued to stop the president's executive action would "suffer irreparable harm in this case" if there was no preliminary injuction.

"The genie would be impossible to put back into the bottle," he wrote, noting as well that he agreed with the plaintiffs that legalizing millions of people is a "virtually irreversible" action.

Following Hanen's decision, Obama -- speaking to reporters in the Oval Office -- defended his actions and disagreed with the court that he had exceeded his authority. Nevertheless, he said that, for now, he had no choice but to abide by the ruling.

"We're not going to disregard this federal court ruling," the president said, but he further stated that administration officials would continue to prepare to initiate the program. "I think the law is on our side and history is on our side," he said, according to the AP.

Prior to Obama issuing his order last fall, he said 22 times that he did not have the authority to do what he did.

"He issued it anyway"

For his part, Cruz said that Hanen's ruling was "a major victory for the rule of law."

"It's interesting; [Obama] says the law is on his side. There's at least one person who calls himself a legal scholar who disagrees, and his name is Barack Obama," Cruz said.

"Twenty-two times President Obama has admitted, he doesn't have the authority to issue unilateral amnesty. Twenty-two times he says the constitution doesn't allow it. He said, 'This is not a monarchy.' That's his quote. And then after the last election, he said never mind and issued it anyway."

Obama's order, if it stands, would grant some 4-5 million illegal aliens a three-year deportation stay and work permits.

Hanen, in his order, said that there was no law on the books permitting the Department of Homeland Security to ignore its immigration enforcement duty.

"No statute gives the DHS the discretion it is trying to exercise here," the judge wrote

The Obama Administration has pledged to appeal Hanen's ruling.
