Gun control now turns to machete control as NY lawmaker tries to criminalize common agricultural tool

(NaturalNews) Assault tactics. Assault rifles. Assault weapons.

Assault machetes? Yes, there are such things, if you're a lunatic legislator from New York who believes a common tool used to clear brush and to cut sugar cane is the mass murderer's next weapon of choice.

As reported by the New York Daily News, the state senator who successfully pushed the 2013 SAFE Act -- New York's uber-restrictive gun control law -- now wants to ban the long-bladed knives, because he believes they are the next big threat to public safety.

Pictured holding a couple of obviously customized machetes that indeed appear to be formidable weapons, Sen. Tony Avella wants to criminalize their possession.

The paper, in its online edition, reported:

The sale of machetes should be outlawed after several recent attacks, a Queens pol said [recently].

State Sen. Tony Avella plans to introduce a bill to ban the possession of the scary blades in New York.

Guns first, then machetes, then...

"The fact that anyone can easily purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy," he said.

And in that single statement, Avella reveals how utterly insane his proposal actually is.

By using the words "potentially" and "tool," Avella seeks to do to machetes what he has successfully managed to do with guns in the left-wing paradise of New York: criminalize the "what if," the "perhaps," the "maybe," at the expense of the vast majority of law-abiding citizens. For those who wish to use a big, "scary" knife to hack people to death, Avella's measure will do nothing to prevent -- just like gun control laws do nothing to stop people from actually using a gun to kill. But they sure make the law-abiding more vulnerable.

For the record, smaller knives are already banned in the Big Apple. Per the Daily News:

Smaller knives such as switchblades and gravity knives are already banned and listed as deadly weapons under state law, but machetes are considered the same as butcher knives.

New Yorkers carrying those knives can be ticketed for a blade longer than 4 inches, an administrative code violation. They face up to 15 days in jail and a $300 fine.

Avella's measure would put people in jail for up to a year if they were found in possession of a machete.

Avella is justifying his bill following an attack last summer on Long Island, in which a man used one of the long-bladed knives to kill a teenager. The suspect, David Sadler, 45, told reporters on his way to his arraignment that he purchased the blade online.

Police have accused Sadler of using it to kill Terrance Grier, 17, by slashing him in the neck during an argument just a block from Sadler's home July 17.

"I didn't even know it was possible to buy a machete online," Terrance's mother, Greta Price, told the Daily News. "I had no idea that it wasn't considered a deadly weapon."

She thinks such weapons should be outlawed, but honestly, what else would a grieving mother say?

"He'd still be alive today if it wasn't for a machete," she told the paper. Perhaps -- but perhaps not. Sadler might have found another way to harm her son; we just don't know.

When knives are outlawed...

In October, a man police have not identified publicly was cut in the neck, back, shoulder and arms following an argument in a Bronx restaurant. Following the assault, police released a video that showed the suspect pulling a machete from an umbrella.

But banning machetes in New York City will not stop the criminally minded from actually possessing them. The problem with such laws -- and the liberal thinking behind them -- is that they seek the impossible: to prevent a criminal thought by criminalizing an object. Men and women who are prone to committing violence will find some way to commit it, using some object or device. Shall we ban all the contents at Home Depot?

Regarding the blades and Avella's mindset, the irony here is that, perhaps, if he was not so keen on disarming New Yorkers with insane gun control laws, more of them would be able to better defend themselves against long knives.
