Dasani

(NaturalNews) As Coca-Cola revamps its Dasani Sparkling brand in an attempt to sell even more overpriced and questionable flavored tap water to gullible consumers, it's a perfect time to remind everyone why they should not buy bottled water at all.

The bottled water scam
Bottled water costs hundreds and sometimes thousands times more than tap water, and often it actually is tap water that has simply been re-filtered and purified before packaging. If bottled water were actually safer and healthier than tap water it might be worth a little extra, but it's not.

Dasani products come from public water supplies, and worldwide, two out of every five bottles of water on the market are nothing more than purified tap water with some minerals added back in.

In fact, much of the bottled water sold in America is less safe than tap water, so you're not only paying extra, but you're also purchasing an inferior and potentially dangerous product.

Bottled water health risks
Although plastic bottle manufacturers have begun phasing out the use of BPA in their products – BPA is an endocrine disruptor that has been linked to a number of health risks – the chemicals used to replace BPA may be just as dangerous, according to recent studies. Plastic bottles also contain other toxic chemicals that can leach into the water; some are known carcinogens.

Many other contaminants can also be found in virtually all bottled water.

From a study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG):

"Laboratory tests conducted for EWG at one of the country's leading water quality laboratories found that 10 popular brands of bottled water, purchased from grocery stores and other retailers in 9 states and the District of Columbia, contained 38 chemical pollutants altogether, with an average of 8 contaminants in each brand. More than one-third of the chemicals found are not regulated in bottled water. In the Sam's Choice and Acadia brands levels of some chemicals exceeded legal limits in California as well as industry-sponsored voluntary safety standards. Four brands were also contaminated with bacteria."

Bottled water is regulated by the FDA, which imposes lower standards than those for tap water, which is regulated by the EPA. In other words, tap water is generally safer than bottled water – unless, of course, you live in Flint, Michigan, or in of the many other areas in the United States where the municipal water supplies are also unsafe.

Breaking the bottled water habit
The inflated prices and health risks far outweigh the convenience of bottled water products – not to mention the environmental impact of all that plastic piling up everywhere. However, tap water can often be unhealthy, too, depending on where you live.

Investing in a quality water filtration system for your home, and storing and carrying water in reusable non-plastic containers, such as glass or stainless steel, will eliminate the need to purchase bottled water.

"Consumers should drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water. Americans pay an average of two-tenths of a cent per gallon to drink water from the tap. A carbon filter at the tap or in a pitcher costs a manageable $0.31 per gallon (12 times lower than the typical cost of bottled water), and removes many of the contaminants found in public tap water supplies. A whole-house carbon filter strips out chemicals not only from drinking water, but also from water used in the shower, clothes washer and dishwasher where they can volatilize into the air for families to breathe in. For an average four-person household, the cost for this system is about $0.25 per person per day. A single gallon of bottled water costs 15 times this amount," notes EWG.

If you are concerned about the quality of your home's tap water, send in a sample to Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, and he will test it for free!

Stop spending money on an overpriced product that harms your health as well as the environment; kick the bottled water habit today!
