Could Manna Be Grits?

When I was a child in Alabama,
We had a main breakfast staple.
It wasn't eggs, bacon, or biscuits,
Neither cane syrup, nor even maple.

It was good yummy, yummy grits,
And as long as my mama was able,
For breakfast every morning,
She put grits on the table.

Sometimes nothing else I wanted,
So I was allowed to just eat grits.
Mama always placed a grits bowl
At the table where my chair sits.

The preacher one Sunday morning,
Said that the Israelites ate
A food called manna from Heaven.
Six days they gathered a rate.

I asked Mama how manna tasted,
And she said, "I do now attest
That manna tasted to each one
Like the food they liked the best."

I thought, "I wonder what manna was.
I really do think that I know.
I think manna was yummy grits.
Those people should love grits so!"
