(NaturalNews) Cases of Alzheimer's disease are on the rise. More than 5 million Americans currently suffer from the devastating condition, and it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Drug-based treatments for Alzheimer's have been disappointingly ineffective, but there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that coconut oil – a completely natural, inexpensive and widely available product – may be an effective aid in preventing and treating the disease.

As a result, there have been few studies to date involving coconut oil as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's.

However, one preliminary study conducted in Spain and published in 2015 showed positive results, suggesting that coconut oil may be quite effective in treating Alzheimer's in some types of patients, particularly among women.

The researchers reported a "statistically significant" increase in the scores of tests measuring mental ability among subjects who were given 40 ml/day of extra virgin coconut oil. The conclusion was that treatment with coconut oil led to an "improvement in cognitive status, improving especially women's, those without diabetes mellitus type II, and severe patients."

Another coconut oil study is currently underway, with the results expected to be published sometime this year. This new research is being conducted by the University of South Florida's Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute, with funding provided by private sources.
