BioActive Compounds in Turmeric Boost Brain Function, Treat Colon Cancer, and Relieve Depression

Over the last ten years studies have proven that turmeric is one of the world’s most potent herbs. But we still don’t know all the benefits of this root. Researchers are discovering new turmeric benefits with every study they conduct.

Curcumin is definitely the most potent compound in turmeric. But studies show that turmeric has other bioactive compounds that can relieve depression, fight colon cancer, and regenerate brain stem cells.

Aromatic turmerone

Aromatic turmerone is a bioactive compound found in turmeric. In this study, researchers found that it can activate and promote neural stem cell proliferation. This means turmeric can be used to heal brain damage caused by trauma or stroke.

Note that the brain has the ability to repair itself after damage. But aromatic turmerone will speed up brain recovery because it increases neural stem cells.

Aromatic turmerone can also help lower risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Lastly, this compound is an antifungal and antimicrobial agent, which means it can improve liver health.

Curcumin and silymarin

Researchers say that curcumin can treat colon cancer when combined with silymarin, a compound found in milk thistle.

According to the scientists, you can kill cancer cells if you first treat them with curcumin followed by silymarin. Note that using these compounds independently isn’t as effective as combining them. Silymarin is popularly known for treating liver disease.

Curcumin is also potent on its own. And it can help relieve depression. In this study, scientists wanted to know curcumin’s effectiveness in treating major depressive disorder (MDD).

The participants were divided in to three groups. One was treated with curcumin, another with Prozac, and the third group was treated with a combination of curcumin and Prozac.

The results showed that the combination of curcumin and Prozac was most effective. But researchers said that curcumin was more effective than Prozac. And it increased dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain without side effects.

Studies also show that turmerone can help fight depression.
