Two Thirds of Americans Think Homosexuality Is Morally Acceptable

Annual Gallup poll reveals the latest casualty figures in the war against family.

Thirty years ago, homosexual activists said you could forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality was a good thing. Today, nearly two thirds of America thinks it is not only a fact of life, but it is morally acceptable.

Every year since 2001, Gallup has polled the American public to find its values and beliefs. This year, 10 of the 19 measured moral issues are the most left-leaning or permissive they have been to date, Gallup reported. The report said that over the course of the poll’s history, “no issues show movement toward conservative positions.”

Among the many shocking record-high acceptances, homosexuality has gained the most favor since the first Values and Beliefs poll was taken 16 years ago. Acceptance for homosexual relations jumped 23 percentage points, from 40 percent approval in 2001 to 63 percent in 2017.

“Before 2001, nowhere in the world were homosexuals legally permitted to ‘marry,’” we wrote in our booklet Redefining Family. “As recently as 2003, consensual sex between two men or two women was still illegal in 14 American states.” Such behavior was nearly unthinkable in the America of our grandparents. But in the late 1960s and 1970s, the seeds of acceptance were planted, and by the 1980s they had taken root.

This year’s Gallup poll is the latest news on a trend the Trumpet has reported on for years. Still, few realize that homosexuality gained acceptance in the United States as a result of a calculated agenda. In November 1987, Guide Magazine published an article titled “The Overhauling of Straight America.” Its authors outlined an agenda to change social perception of homosexuality. They wrote (emphasis added):

We do not need and cannot expect a full “appreciation” or “understanding” of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their shoulders, then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won. And to get to the shoulder-shrug stage, gays as a class must cease to appear mysterious, alien, loathsome and contrary. A large-scale media campaign will be required in order to change the image of gays in America.

So what’s all the fuss? Traditional marriage and family has always been the bedrock of any society. But is it merely tradition? What if marriage isn’t just a tradition?

Marriage—the union between one man and one woman—is a universal institution created by God at the start of human history. It is bound by the laws of God. We wrote in Redefining Family (emphasis added):

When we break those laws, our lives get broken. When we try to “redefine” something we did not create, we suffer. To see the proof, just look around. Our “traditional” marriages have trashed God’s laws to the point where fornication, cohabitation, adultery, divorce, shattered homes and fatherlessness are epidemic. Many people recognize the resulting crises and are desperate for answers: how to have harmonious marriages; how to control wild kids; how to bring sanity to their home and lives. Sadly, the vast majority look ahead to the latest in human reasoning, rather than back to the Creator of marriage and family for the answers.
