Texas: If You Want Abortion Coverage, YOU Pay For It

Texas Republicans, unlike the ones in Washington, know how to make the most of their majority. Instead of constantly compromising with Democrats, soft-peddling their own promises, and indulging in intra-party infighting, the legislature actually works to get things done for the voters. We’re not going to pretend like the Lone Star State’s politicians are free from scandal, lies, or any of the other vagaries of politics, but we admire their willingness to actually get in there and mix it up for the good of conservatism.

The Texas House recently forwarded a new bill that is already causing plenty of hand-wringing on the left. The bill would essentially free women from being forced to buy health insurance that offers abortion coverage, thus putting women who actually plan on having abortions in their correct seat of responsibility. If you want abortion coverage, great. YOU pay for it. That’s what this bill would do. Naturally, Democrats see this bill as a sign of the apocalypse, since, you know, a woman’s right to an abortion is one of this country’s founding principles or something like that…

“This isn’t about who can get an abortion,” said the bill’s lead author, State Rep. John Smithee. “It is about who is forced to pay for an abortion.”

Democrats, under the guise of trying to make the bill politically toxic, introduced a whole series of exemption amendments to the bill. And here’s where we see how Texas Republicans differ from their Washington counterparts. Under the harsh spotlights of the mainstream media, the national party feels pressured to add in all of these things from the left. In Texas, nothing doing. Exceptions for fetal abnormalities, rape, incest, mental health, all out the window. Republicans passed the clean bill 95 to 51, sending it on to the state Senate.

The extremist liberals on the other side of the aisle are now trying to put the bill in the most inane contexts possible to force Republicans to abandon the bill.

Rep. Chris Turner, for instance, said the bill amounted to making women purchase rape insurance.

“Women don’t plan to be raped,” he said. “Parents don’t plan for their children to be victims of incest. Asking a woman or a parent to foresee something like that and buy supplemental insurance to cover that horrific possibility is not only ridiculous, it is cruel.”

This is an absurd argument that ignores the fact that, by law right now, employers and marketplace insurers are forced to include abortion coverage in their plans, which in turn makes abortion (of all kinds – not just in the cases of rape, incest, etc.) a procedure subsidized even by its fiercest opponents. It also ignores the fact that Democrats dug their own hole on this one. By attempting to normalize abortion as a basic health procedure, they’ve given their voters false hope that doesn’t match the country’s overall opinion on this divisive topic. It isn’t normal, it isn’t going to be normal anytime soon, and you will never convince a significant number of Americans that it is anything other than murder.

Frankly, it shouldn’t be covered by any form of health insurance. As long as it is, however, there’s no reason why pro-life individuals should have to pay for it.
