8 Bible Verses To Strengthen A Marriage

The couple that prays together, stays together, but also the couple that studies together, so here are 8 Bible verses for couples to study in order to strengthen their marriage.
God Joins Together
Matthew 19:5-6 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
When a couple weds, they become an entirely new family. It’s just as Jesus said; “the two become one flesh and are no longer two but one.” That’s why a man must leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife. I would add that the couple must leave their families in the sense of not allowing them to dictate or influence how the couple should live together as husband and wife. They most hold fast to their spouse and let go of their families. The new family has become their central focus.
The Fate of Adulterers
Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Clearly this is a mandate against adultery. God warns that all the sexually immoral will be judged someday if they don’t repent, and obviously, this means adultery. No one that practices adultery can expect to enter the kingdom (Gal 5:19-21), and I find it interesting that the Apostle Paul lists sins that will keep people out of the kingdom (unless they repent) and this list begins with “sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality” (Gal 5:19).
Being Alone
Genesis 2:18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Some people relish the single life and are fine with the life they have. They can come and go whenever they wish, and don’t see marriage as something they want in life; at least now, but for those who desire to be married and are looking for a godly spouse, they already know this is true; “It is not good that man [or woman] be alone.” Marriage is not for everyone, especially if they have no desire for it, but for those who are single and are seeking a mate, they know it’s not good to be alone. For them, being single or being alone is overrated.
Two over One
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
Marriage is a partnership and what effects one partner directly affects the other, so when adversity strikes, it’s better to have someone alongside that will “lift up his fellow,” and for them, two is better than one. Whoever is alone has no other to lift them up again, so clearly, two are better than one “because they have a good reward for their toil.”

Fleeing Sexual Immorality
1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
The Apostle Paul has written that the sexually immoral will not inherit the kingdom (1 Cor 6:9; Gal 5:19), so he suggests that we “Flee from sexual immorality.” Don’t walk away slowly, but run when tempted to commit adultery. Remember that no unrepentant adulterers will enter heaven. It’s not a gray area but clearly, black and white.
Two Become One
Genesis 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

When a couple marries, they are no longer two single people but they are one or one new family. The two “shall become one flesh” and are no longer with their father and mother. Instead, they are to hold fast to their spouse and let loose of their family ties. This doesn’t mean the in-laws are now treated at outlaws, but the priority becomes their spouse and not their father and mother.

Grounds for Divorce
Matthew 5:31-32 It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Today, people divorce for any number of reasons, and many of them are unbiblical ones. There is divorce over incompatibility, disillusionment, parenting differences, or any other number of man-made reasons. Of course, the person who is being abused must not only leave that situation, they should report the abuser to law enforcement, but otherwise, for all other cases, adultery is the only reason someone can divorce and then remarry. There are no exceptions, although some believe if a believing spouse has a mate that leaves, they are not bound (1 Cor 7:15). We do know that God hates divorce (Mal 2:16), but God loves divorced believers and forgives. What is done is done. You cannot unscramble an egg.
Walking in Agreement
Amos 3:3 Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet.
Amos the Prophet asks a rhetorical question: “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet” (Amos 3:3)? Obviously, they cannot. If one is ahead of the other or one is lagging behind, they are not in agreement with one another, but if they walk in agreement with one another, they can have that three-fold cord that binds them together, and that’s the Holy Spirit of God, and so we can say, “If two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Eccl 4:11-12). If the Holy Spirit doesn’t have His way in a marriage, they cannot walk together for very long.
Conclusion
Marriage takes work and it must include both spouses, but warning after warning tell us what destroys a marriage more than anything, and it mentioned in Ephesians 5:3 where the Apostle Paul says that “sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.” I believe that if you study the Bible with your spouse, and these Bible verses in particular, you can strengthen your marriage. The Word of God has power to change us, and with the Holy Spirit and the holy Word of God, couples can more easily stay together for life…the way it was intended in the beginning, and as Jesus said, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:6), so “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:9).
