50 God Caused a Man to Die for Just Q2:259

God caused a man to die for just

One hundred years and turn to dust

And then brought him in body back

To life so that he had no lack.

God asked him how long he was so,

And he answered a day to go

Or part of a day, but not more.

God laughed and said look at your score.

Your food is still good in its pouch,

Your donkey resting on his couch,

And you have been a century dead,

And your friends and your kin have fled.

The joke is on those who reveal

The strange beliefs they have at heel,

That there’s a soul that’s made of naught,

And it’s eternal in the plot.

The man was without consciousness

While his body was dead, I guess

There was no light at tunnel’s end,

No heavenly cloud or harp to bend.

He simply did not know a thing

Of what went on by foot or wing.

But when God resurrected him,

He went on where he left off trim.

There was no barzak with a fiend,

There was no angel’s questions gleaned.

There was no patter of the feet

Of mourners going down the street.

While the man’s body rotted there,

His donkey lived immortal, fair,

Or so it seemed, a century,

Just resting from his slavery.

So God teaches a man to know

That he is dust and on the go

Only as God will resurrect

Him or give life and breath select.

But donkeys are favored and blessed,

The favorites of God unguessed.

Those who despise and ridicule

The donkey take the name of fool.
