Teacher arrested after assaulting child and stealing food from hungry six-year-olds

(NaturalNews) Imagine if your six-year-old child came back from school after only a few days and seemed upset. Upon inquiring, you discover his teacher took half of his lunch away and slapped him around some. Then you find other parents with similar reports with the same teacher at the same school. Pretty pathetic, right?

Even the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office in St. Francisville, Louisiana sheriff's thought so. They had issued an arrest warrant against Baines Lower Elementary School teacher, 31 year-old-Chanel Lemelle, for one count of cruelty to a minor. Chenel soon surrendered and posted $20,000 bail, then retired from teaching, at least for now.

Chanel's attorney, Don Cazayoux, said before she surrendered to the warrant that Chanel "was devastated". She loves her students and she would never do anything intentionally to hurt any of them", adding, "She has faith in the legal system."

And well she should. Her attorney works for her dad's law firm. J.S. "Stan" Lemelle started his legal defense firm after serving 35 years as federal prosecutor for the Louisiana Middle District. His career was distinguished with several corruption convictions on state and law enforcement officials. Stan has also been revered for his prosecution record with white collar crime.

Upon Lemelle's retirement and before starting his own legal defense firm, acting U.S. Attorney Walt Green mused,"Will he stay retired? "I hope so. I hope he never comes back on the defense side, because he's a tough competitor."

So yes, Chanel is represented well enough to have faith in the legal system.

A preponderance of evidence against Ms. Chanel Lemelle
The one criminal count of cruelty to a minor centered on a six-year-old boy whose episodes were captured on school cafeteria surveillance cameras and corroborated by eye witness accounts. Chanel really had it in for this kid!

She was seen slapping him on the back of the head and kicking him in the rear after making him get out of the cafeteria line because he wasn't walking right. Then when she let him get his lunch, after all the other kids did, she grabbed one of his two tacos and said he only needed one. This was not an isolated incident.

According to witnesses accounts to sheriff's deputies, Chanel often brought an empty plate to lunch and filled it with food from her students.

This author remembers lunch time and recess for open recreation as the only bright moments in an otherwise relatively oppressive Catholic elementary school atmosphere. Seems like the kids at Baines Lower Elementary had one those bright moments clouded over a bit with Chanel around.

Witnesses also saw Chanel screaming at the same boy in the hallway, waving a stick at him as he cried facing the wall. Although Louisiana's history is steeped in Catholicism, Ms. Chanel Lemelle is not a Catholic nun. Some of them have been known to exhibit that type of "tough love" behavior.

District school superintendent Hollis Milton claimed that this 10-year veteran teacher's episode was an anomaly within the school district, asserting that the allegations against Chanel were serious but shouldn't overshadow "the positive, warm culture that children experience every day."

"The majority of our folks do just a tremendous job for our kids," Milton said. "At the end of the day, it's still a wonderful school."

Not everyone agrees. "I know what my child has experienced within this school district," posted Michelle A. Gaines. "This school system is horrible and they cover up so much wrong doing. I feel sorry for other parents who have had the same issues and pulled their kids from this school district. I have recently pulled my child."
