(NaturalNews) The findings of a new study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine and published late last month suggest that pregnant women's immune systems are more active than previously thought, particularly when exposed to the flu virus.

Immune responses were believed to be weakened during pregnancy in order to prevent the body from attacking the fetus, scientists say; however, experts are now finding that immune responses are enhanced while carrying a child.

The study, published Sept. 22 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined cells taken from 21 pregnant women and 29 healthy, nonpregnant women, exposing both sets of samples to different flu viruses in the lab. Blood samples were collected before and seven days after they received flu vaccines.

Researchers also tested immune cells taken from pregnant women six weeks after their babies were delivered. Immune cells were exposed to H1N1 and a strain of seasonal influenza, H3N2, to test their responses.

Immune response in pregnant women reacts more aggressively than in nonpregnant women

According to the results, pregnant women's bodies reacted promptly, as they should, producing two types of white blood cells, natural killer (NK) and T cells, following exposure to H1N1. Pregnant women's NK and T cells produced more virus-fighting molecules that attracted other immune cells to help ward off infection.

Instead of applauding this result, scientists warn that too many immune cells can be a bad thing, for example, when there's an infection in your lung and it needs air space, explained the study's senior author and assistant professor of infectious diseases, Catherine Blish, MD, PhD.

Beyond that, NK and T cells in pregnant women were activated in a "greater variety of ways" than in nonpregnant women, the study found. The immune cells of nonpregnant women did not respond as aggressively as those of pregnant women. The increased immune response is believed to be why pregnant women become sicker than others upon flu contraction. The researchers reported that NK and T cell responses were enhanced after vaccination.

Scientists irresponsibly recommend flu shot for pregnant women, despite the proven risks

Concluding their report, scientists say the best way to avoid risks caused by the virus is vaccination. "Flu vaccination is very important to avoid this inflammatory response we're seeing," urged Alexander Kay, MD, instructor in pediatric infectious diseases and the study's lead author.

Their recommendation is completely irresponsible when considering the numerous studies that have proven the severe, and often permanent, side effects caused by the flu vaccine.

A scientific study published in The Lancet and reported on by Natural News found that the influenza vaccine only protects 1.5 out of 100 adults, not 60 percent like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the mainstream media suggest.

In addition to offering little protection, the shots also contain very high levels of mercury, and other heavy metals, enough to cause harm to anyone, especially pregnant women.

Over the summer, the Natural News Forensic Food Lab performed their own tests on a flu shot manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, finding 51 parts per million of mercury in the FluLaval vaccine, which is over 25,000 times higher than the maximum contaminant level of inorganic mercury in drinking water set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The package insert for GlaxoSmithKline openly admits that the vaccine has never been subjected to clinical trials. It also admits that it's safety and effectiveness has not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers or children.

Other studies [PDF] show that prenatal influenza vaccines can cause "increased risk of several specific birth defects (cleft palate, microcephaly, pyloric stenosis)... as well as increases in malformations following exposures to the vaccine preservative thimerosal."
