How Could a Member of Congress Stoop This Low?

Your Representative and Senators are spending an average of four hours out of every legislative working day in a grubby, sweaty little cubical toiling away and making telemarketing calls to beg for cash... while they are supposed to be "on the clock" for you!

Rep. Dave Jolly (R-FL) told the "60 Minutes" news program that almost every Member of Congress spends 75% of their in-session workdays fundraising instead of actually working.

We are supporting Rep. Jolly's "Stop Act" (HR 4443) which would ban Members of Congress from soliciting funds while they are on the clock for the American people.

Rep. Jolly says that the first day he arrived in Congress in 2014, then-House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled him aside.

They told him, "Your job, new member of Congress, is to raise $18,000 a day [for the RNC]. Your first responsibility is to make sure you hit $18,000 a day."

It is illegal for Members to solicit campaign funds while they are at their congressional offices, so how do they get away with this?

Republicans walk across the street to RNC headquarters on First Street and Democrats walk over to DNC headquarters on Capitol Hill Street.

Rep. Jolly says both headquarters have tiny call center rooms set up and every Senator and Representative spends an average of four hours per day grinding away in there -- while Congress is in session -- calling lists of donors to beg for cash!

In addition, Congressmen each spend up to three hours per day schmoozing with lobbyists and big money donors, leaving only about two hours for actual WORK!

Rep. Jolly says that the House schedule is written with telemarketing calls scheduled in so that all members have time to beg for cash on the phone!

And if any member refuses to make those calls -- or if they make the calls but fail to hit their daily cash haul -- the national party cuts them off and won't help them get reelected.
