(NaturalNews) Okay, it may be one of those typical sensationalist tabloid stories, but the now-gone-viral video of a pig in China born with what appears to be a human face and a strange, ahem, appendage dangling from its forehead, might have more to do with the high levels of pollution in the country and its agricultural practices than with any of the other wild speculation about the cause of the unfortunate porker's bizarre mutation.

The video in question, which has been posted on many websites in the past few days, depicts a newborn piglet with an unusually human-looking face, an unnaturally large tongue and what appears to be a "penis" – yes, you read that correctly – protruding from its forehead.

In the video, the piglet is held up in front of the camera while apparently gasping for breath. The footage lasts only a few seconds, but it's long enough to clearly show the weird human-like features and the phallic appurtenance that seems to have sprouted from its forehead.

The origins of the video are unclear, but it does appear to be real, and it may disturb some viewers, so stand forewarned.

What the pundits are saying about the poor piglet
The video has prompted much speculation, but most of the saner commentaries agree that the deformity was likely caused by environmental toxins or other factors, and not unnatural relations between the farmer and the piglet's mother.

It seems that there has been a spate of similar deformities in newborn pigs recently, and perhaps that's just a misconception caused by the increasing numbers of people with video cameras who have been uploading footage of such phenomena to the web. But there may be an actual increase in these cases occurring due to human-caused imbalances in the natural world.

"It is unclear where the disturbing video originated from and whether the piglet survived.

"This isn't the first time a pig has been born with a facial deformity – with new mutant pigs being reported from South America through to China.

"Earlier this year, another piglet was reportedly born with 'testicles' instead of eyes. ...

"It is believed the deformities are a result of nutritional issues, poisoning, infectious agents, abnormal metabolisms or hereditary defects."

The Sun article also contains a quote from a Reddit contributor who points out that these types of deformities may be caused by industrial-scale pig farming methods:

"With the amount of inbreeding and billions of pigs born in the U.S. both in the commercial and breeding side of the industry, mutations happen.

"It's the same with people, enough are produced that some are born with extra appendages or even chromosomes."

What are the implications?
Although we may be tempted to gawk or laugh at these deformities, there may be a serious warning to humankind contained in the depictions of such phenomena.

Humans and pigs are closely related, and whether it's industrial pollution, inbreeding or infectious agents causing such aberrations, the fault is likely ours and we may be inflicting the same punishment on ourselves too.

Industrialized agriculture with its cruel and inhumane practices – not to mention the use of hormones, antibiotics and other unnatural methods of increasing yield – affects the people eating the meat produced by these methods as well as the unfortunate animals themselves.

We have disturbed the balance of nature, and we – along with the pigs, chickens and cows we raise – are also becoming weak, sick and deformed.

Pesticides, herbicides and all the other dangerous pollutants we carelessly dump into the environment are killing bees, causing mutations in animals and poisoning humans in the process.

If we took a good long look in the mirror, we may begin to recognize who the real mutated "pigs" actually are. ...
