Federal law

(NaturalNews) One of the tactics used by a corrupt corporate-owned government – such as the one currently in power in the United States – is to pass legislation that on the surface appears to give the public what it wants, but which in reality accomplishes the opposite.

Such is the case with the new federal GMO labeling law signed by President Obama last month.

The passage of the new legislation allows the president to take false credit for acknowledging the demands of the populace – polls show that more than 90 percent of Americans want GMO labeling on food products – while the law actually allows the GMO food industry to continue hiding the truth about products containing GM ingredients.

It's a fiendishly clever move, but par for the course for a government that exists solely to protect the interests of big corporations, such as those which make up the GMO food industry.

A loophole so big, you could drive a GMO food truck through it
So how does the new GMO labeling law manage to accomplish the goal of hiding GMO ingredients?

Well, as usual, the devil is in the details. Under the new legislation, makers of foods containing GMOs have three "labeling" options.

From DrMicozzi.com:

"The law allows companies to inform consumers in one of three ways whether a product contains a GMO.

"First, they can actually present the information on the product label. Or, they can share GMO disclosures in barcodes that you must scan on your smartphone. Worse yet, the law even allows food makers to print an 800 number on the package, so consumers must make a phone call to get more information."

The stipulations of the new law are clearly designed to provide a giant loophole for the GMO food industry. Some might try to pass this off as a "compromise," but the obvious aim is to make it very easy for companies to hide GMO content by making it difficult for consumers to access information about such content.

First of all, not everyone owns a smartphone. And among those who don't, how many will take the time to call an 800 number for every single food product they are thinking of purchasing?

The obvious answer is almost none.

And although some "honest" companies may opt for clearly printed GM ingredient labeling on their Frankenfood products, it can be expected that most will not.

The barcode loophole is bad enough, but the 800 number option makes the new law an essentially meaningless piece of legislation, obviously created under pressure from GMO food industry lobbyists.

As Dr. Micozzi noted:

"This latest law is yet another example of big, crony capitalist federal government stepping in to undermine the states. (Just as they just did with controlling environmental chemicals.) They throw out the excuse they want. In this case 'uniform' global standards for everything.

"But really, the new federal law undermines and undercuts individual state laws, like Vermont's."

As Dr. Micozzi pointed out in his insightful and informative article, Vermont's GMO labeling law was a great example of what such a law could and should accomplish.

After Vermont passed its own GMO labeling law, which required clearly-printed information regarding GM ingredients, several big food companies began labeling all of their products (not just the ones sold in Vermont), while other companies actually removed GMO ingredients from their products in response to the labeling requirements.

Thanks, Obama
The new federal law is so completely toothless and full of loopholes that it might as well have been drafted by the GMO industry itself – which is probably not too far from the actual truth.

Thanks to the Obama administration, we now have a federal law which ensures that the GMO food industry can continue pushing its poisons on the American public without their knowledge and against their wishes.
