Food pyramid

(NaturalNews) The increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes in our modern society may be at least partly due to flawed governmental dietary recommendations that are based on bogus science, some experts say.

A recent article published by Finnish website Ink Tank explores the evolution of mankind and the changes in our dietary habits over the millennia. The basic premise is that in very recent times we have begun to adopt unhealthy eating habits that are making us fatter and more prone to diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses related to poor diet.

It may come as a surprise to many that our hunter-gatherer ancestors enjoyed better health and longer lifespans compared to many of us today. And it appears that one of the main reasons we are now seeing a rise in obesity and diabetes, etc. is that we've been duped by the food industry into believing that eating a lot of cereals is a key to good health.

In fact, the consumption of large amounts of grain is a relatively recent trend in human history:

"Funnily, some theories suggest we started farming primarily to get a reliable source of alcohol to get drunk. Either way, it was only 12,000 years ago that we started eating grains in any quantity, with the result of reduced height, a fatter, more sickly lifestyle and shorter lifespan."

And in the 20th century, our consumption of cereal grains increased even more, mainly due to the political influence of Big Agriculture:

"Throughout the post war period, US industrial cereal farming gained greater power in political lobbying. They funded the scientific research they wanted to see and helped hide the studies that didn't fit with their business model. ...

"The cereal industry was complicit in promoting the high carbohydrate and vegetable seed oil food fad through manufacturing the fear of saturated fat."

Ancel Keys and his fraudulent study
One of the biggest scientific frauds contributing to the shaping of current beliefs regarding diet and health was perpetrated by a man named Ancel Keys.

In 1953, Keys published a study purporting to show a correlation between dietary fat, cholesterol and heart disease. Although the study was deeply flawed – it relied on the blatant cherry-picking of data to support its conclusions – it became the basis of the now-prevalent belief that a high fat diet causes the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries, which then leads to heart attacks.

Bolstered by Keys' false conclusions, and fueled by political lobbying from corporate interests, the USDA began promoting the idea that a healthy diet should be based on the consumption of cereal grains.

The 'food pyramid' scam
In fact, the familiar "food pyramid" introduced by the USDA during the Nixon administration featured cereals as its foundation; we were told that we should reduce our fat intake and to base our daily diets on refined grains.

Since that time, obesity and diabetes rates have skyrocketed in the United States, and despite the fact that Keys conclusions have been thoroughly debunked, many Americans continue to eat unhealthy amounts of cereals – not to mention loads of sugar and other processed garbage disguised as food.

Although it may seem logical at first glance that eating fat will make you fat, it's actually not the real problem with American diets.

If you truly want to maintain a healthy weight and avoid developing diabetes and other diet-related diseases, a good way to start is by reducing your cereal intake – especially wheat.

A low-carbohydrate diet based on the consumption of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, along with healthy amounts of oily fish and organically-raised chemical-free meats, is the real key to a long and healthy life.
