45 The Qur’an Addresses those who Believe Q2:254

The Qur’an addresses those who believe

And begs them to give something to relieve

The hunger of the poor and dispossessed

Out of the bounties given and unguessed.

The reason is a day is coming soon

Or late when there shall be no helping boon

Of bargaining nor friendship nor the rate

Of intercession at the village gate.

Then those who have rejected faith shall see

They are just evil-doers on a spree.

But there’s just one thing here that bother’s me:

That’s that faith is defined in charity.

The sweet Christian is sure that faith is done

When prayers are said and Christ is made God’s son

And the tongue does confess the heartfelt creed

That Jesus died to answer human need.

But the Qur’an implies if not well stated

That faith is giving alms to the poor rated,

Some say one’s saved by faith and that is true

For the poor saved by food brought into view.

If I must choose between faith as a spark

Of inspiration in the inner dark

And faith as giving bread to hungry folk,

I think I do prefer the latter stroke,

At least if I am one to get the gift

And not the one to pay dollars in rift.

No wonder Islam is not popular

Among the bankers for a faithful star.
